Meta AI Ad Terms (November 20, 2026): What Changes and What to Do

Meta's new AI ad terms effective November 20, 2026: AI Features clause, 17 AI enhancements and how to turn them off

From November 20, 2026, new Meta AI ad terms take effect: the updated Meta Commercial Terms make every business that advertises on Facebook or Instagram solely responsible for what Meta's AI features do to its ads. The new "AI Features" section says those features "may make mistakes," puts "any and all risks" of the resulting content on you, and forbids removing AI watermarks. Meta first planned October 30 as the effective date, then moved it to November 20 after concerns from advertisers and publishers.

Key points (checked on Meta's own pages on November 1, 2026):

  • Start date: November 20, 2026. You don't click to accept; continuing to use Meta for business after notice counts as agreeing.
  • AI risk moves to you: you "assume any and all risks" of Meta's AI features and the content they produce.
  • 17 of 31 Advantage+ creative enhancements are labeled as generative AI in Meta's Help Center, and some enhancements can be on by default.
  • You can turn them off per ad in Ads Manager, but you have to check two places: the Enhancements step and Advanced preview.

This is not legal advice. We quote the terms as Meta publishes them; ask your lawyer how they apply to your business.

What are the new Meta Commercial Terms?

The Meta Commercial Terms are the contract for any business use of Meta products: running ads, selling products, managing a Page or using Meta's measurement services. Meta's Commercial Terms preview carries the line "These updates will go into effect on November 20, 2026." The current version has been in force since March 6, 2024.

The biggest change is a new section called AI Features. In Meta's words:

"AI features may make mistakes and may not always produce accurate, complete, or suitable results. You are solely responsible for and assume any and all risks associated with such AI features and any resulting Content, including evaluating the suitability of any Content for business or commercial purposes. You must not alter or remove any watermark or content-authenticating metadata generated by AI in connection with Content."

In plain English: if a Meta AI feature rewrites your headline, translates your copy or generates a background, and the result is wrong or unsuitable, the contract treats it as your content and your risk. The clause covers AI features Meta "may use or make available"; its wording does not limit it to features you switched on yourself.

When do Meta's new ad terms take effect?

Meta's updated Commercial Terms take effect on November 20, 2026. Meta had originally planned October 30. A Meta spokesperson told Marketing-Interactive the company was "extending the effective date of our updated Commercial Terms and Self-Serve Ad Terms to 20 November to allow more time for us to explain to our partners and stakeholders what's changing and what's not," including how Meta uses web crawlers and the fact that content owners can still use robots.txt to signal preferences.

The terms' Updates clause explains how you agree: "By continuing any access or use of any Meta Company Products for business or commercial purposes after any notice of an update to these Commercial Terms, you agree to be bound by them." The only alternative the terms offer is to stop all business use of Meta's products.

What else changes for advertisers?

Here is the AI clause next to four other points in Meta's November 20 version that matter for advertisers:

Clause What the November 20 version says What to do
AI features You "assume any and all risks" of Meta's AI features and any resulting content; you must not remove AI watermarks or content-authenticating metadata. Review which AI enhancements are on in each ad.
Third-party tools You are "solely responsible for the acts or omissions of any third-party software or service" you use or authorize with Meta products. Ask your agency and ad tools which AI features they use.
Website crawling You authorize Meta to use "web scrapers, bots, robots, spiders, crawlers" on the domains and pages associated with your products, to provide and improve its ad and business products. Know which pages are linked from your ads and catalogs.
Liability cap Meta's total liability is capped at the greater of $100 or what you paid Meta in the past twelve months, to the extent the law allows. Keep your own records of approved creative.
Warranties Meta products are provided "AS-IS," with implied warranties disclaimed to the extent the law allows. Don't rely on Meta to catch errors in AI edits.

Which Advantage+ creative enhancements use AI?

Meta's About Advantage+ creative page lists 31 Advantage+ creative enhancements and labels 17 of them as using generative AI or having the option to use it (checked November 1, 2026):

  • Labeled AI (17): Add animation, Add music, Add overlays, Add video effects, Background generation, Create sticker CTA, Enhance CTA, Enhance media text, Image generation, Image touch-ups, Show summaries, Text generation, Text improvements, Translations, Video subtitles, Video touch-ups, Visual touch-ups.
  • Not labeled AI (14): Add details to ad layout, Add dynamic overlays, Add product browsing, Add product tags, Add standard label, Adjust brightness and contrast, Dynamic description, Flex media, Highlight carousel card, Profile end card, Relevant comments, Reveal details over time, Show spotlights, Store locations.

The same page says: "Some enhancements may be turned on by default, but you can turn them off at any time." Which ones you see depends on your ad format, placements and whether you use a catalog. Meta also notes that it launched separate Ad Creative Generative AI Terms for these features on May 6, 2024.

How do you turn off Advantage+ creative enhancements?

You turn off Advantage+ creative enhancements per ad in Meta Ads Manager, and you have to check two places: the Enhancements step and Advanced preview. Meta's help page on turning them off notes that "some enhancements can only be turned off in Advanced preview, and won't be visible in the Ad creative."

For a new ad:

  1. In Meta Ads Manager, click + Create and complete the steps until you reach Ad setup.
  2. Choose Create ad, then Single image or video or Carousel as the format.
  3. In Ad creative, click Set up creative and continue to Enhancements. Turn off the enhancements you don't want, then click Done.
  4. In the ad preview, click Expand to open Advanced preview, open the Advantage+ creative tab and turn off any enhancement that is still on. Click Save, then publish.

For an ad that is already live:

  1. In Ads Manager, open Ads, tick the ads you want to change and click Edit.
  2. In the Advantage+ creative section you'll see how many enhancements are on. Click Edit and turn off the ones you don't want.
  3. Check Advanced preview as above, then click Save and Publish.

Meta links a bulk-edit option for Advantage+ creative enhancements and a separate setting for testing new creative features from the same help pages.

Checklist: what to do before November 20, 2026

  1. List your live ads on Facebook, Instagram and Messenger, including boosted posts.
  2. Open each ad's Advantage+ creative section and Advanced preview, and note which enhancements are on, especially the 17 labeled AI.
  3. Decide per enhancement. Brightness or layout tweaks may be fine; text generation, translations or image generation on an ad with prices, health or legal claims deserve a human check or should be off.
  4. Review previews before publishing. Meta's own instruction is to "check the ad preview and review how the enhancements might adjust your ad creative before publishing your ad."
  5. Keep AI labels and watermarks. The new terms forbid removing AI watermarks or content-authenticating metadata.
  6. Brief your agency. Under the new terms you answer for third-party tools and services you authorize, so ask which AI features they leave on.
  7. Repeat the audit when you launch new campaigns, because available enhancements change by format and placement.

How can you keep control of your ad creative?

The simplest way to stay in control is to upload finished creative you have already approved, in every size and language you need, so fewer decisions are left to automatic enhancements. That means writing your own headline variants, making vertical and square versions yourself, and localizing copy per market instead of relying on automatic translation.
